林纾在1899年至1925年的27年间共发表长篇小说译作153篇，相关翻译活动情况折射出其受内外部因素影响从事翻译事业的动机。晚清时局及作为赞助人的商务印书馆是影响林纾翻译的重要外部因素。作为一个“开眼看世界”的文学翻译家，林纾的翻译动机主要同文学和西学相关，包括开民智、了解外国文学及外国、鼓励时人学习西学、发展中国文学等。他因站在新文化运动对立面而未在翻译动机上与之相符。此外，林纾在翻译动机上具有强烈的爱国情怀，既因其秉持文人士气、反对推翻清政府的政治主张不尚武，又因其作为华夏儿女的拳拳之心在面对列强外侮时坚定弘扬尚武精神。爱国之心是其始终如一坚持下来从事翻译事业的动机。从出版机构和时间跨度这两个外部角度以及译者自身的角度出发，探讨林纾从事翻译事业的动机，有助于了解翻译与时代的关系并进一步丰富林纾文化研究。
Abstract:
During the 27 years from 1899 to 1925, Lin Shu published 153 fulllength novels. These translation activities reflected Lin Shu’s motivations for the translation career owing to internal and external factors. The political situation of the Late Qing Dynasty and the Commercial Press as his sponsor were important external factors for Lin Shu’s translation. As a literary translator who “opens his eyes to the world”, Lin Shu’s translation motives were related to literature and Western learning, including enlightening people’s wisdom in earlier times, knowing foreign literature and foreign countries, encouraging people at that time to learn western knowledge and developing Chinese literature. Standing on the opposite side of the New Culture Movement, Lin Shu did not adjust his translation motives according to it. In terms of translation motivation, holding strong patriotic feelings while doing translation, Lin Shu disagreed with the use of force since he was a literate who disliked the political proposition of overthrowing the Qing government, while he promoted the spirit of using force firmly while facing foreign aggression owing to his sincerity as a Chinese. Patriotism was always the motivation for Lin Shu’s translation career. From two external factors including the publisher and the time span of Lin Shu’s translation and what concerns the translator himself, exploring Lin Shu’s motivation to engage in translation would benefit the understanding of the relationship between translation and the times, while enriching the cultural studies of Lin Shu.
