Abstract:
Edith Louisa Sitwell(1887-1964) was a 20th century British modernist poetess in the first half of the 20th century. She was deeply influenced by French symbolism, and showed great dissatisfaction with the realism advocated by contemporary poets. Instead, she laid stress on the artistry of poetry, suggesting that art is the transformation of life. Like other modernist poets, Edith revealed, through her poetry, the emptiness and anxiety of modern people. Moreover, she also strove for innovation by setting strange images in lines, and by emphasizing the sound elements. Therefore, her poetry evolved to become superior to the rigid and weak cotemporary style, and established itself to be unique in the 20th century’s English poetry.
