Abstract:
This study evaluated the enhancement effect of the Zr-ba<x>sed me<x>tal–organic fr<x>amework UiO-66 on the performance of a membrane bioreactor(MBR)treating chemical wastewater. Three parallel systems were established, including a conventional MBR(R1), a powdered activated carbon-enhanced MBR(R2), and a UiO-66-enhanced MBR(R3), to investigate pollutant removal, maintenance of microbial activity, and membrane fouling mitigation. The results showed that UiO-66 possessed a well-defined microporous structure and a stable Zr–O fr<x>amework, with a specific surface area higher than that of PAC. During long-term operation, the R3 system achieved COD and ammonium nitrogen removal efficiencies of 98.3% and 98.4%, respectively, outperforming both R1 and R2. In addition, the MLVSS/MLSS ratio in R3 remained stable above 0.89, accompanied by improved enrichment of dominant microbial communities. The R3 system also exhibited the lowest rate of transmembrane pressure increase and a significantly prolonged membrane cleaning cycle. These findings demonstrate that UiO-66 can effectively improve the operational performance and anti-fouling capacity of MBRs for chemical wastewater treatment
