林纾在严复去世后作祭告文,以柳宗元的行迹、冤屈和失意来比况严复,在评点古文时亦多阐此意。林纾非常推崇韩愈,他从严复的祝寿诗中感觉严复隐然将他比于韩愈。从严复评点古文看,严复当然也推崇韩柳,但有时也有指瑕,并且他认为,即使高明处后人学之难佳,不宜步趋。由此可以看出,严复并不甘当古人。林、严二人同属文化保守主义者,观念同中有异,但有差异也不影响他们的交往和互相推崇。从韩柳的角度切入探寻林、严心迹,能够更加深入认识二人及其所处的转型时代。
Abstract:
After Yan Fu’s passing, Lin Shu composed a sacrificial oration, comparing Yan Fu’s life trajectories, grievances, and frustrations to those of Liu Zongyuan. Lin Shu elaborated on this idea frequently when commenting on classical prose. Lin Shu admired Han Yu very much. He believed that Yan Fu subtly compared him to Han Yu through his birthday poems poems . From Yan Fu’s comments on classical prose, it is evident that he admired both Han Yu and Liu Zongyuan, but occasionally pointed out minor flaws. Yan Fu maintained that even the most excellent aspects of their works in the past were difficult for later generations to imitate and that following them blindly was unwise. This indicates that Yan Fu was not willing to simply be an imitator of the ancients. Though both were cultural conservatives, their views diverged in certain respects. These differences, however, did not hinder their interactions or mutual respect. By delving into their inner thoughts and feelings through the lens of Han Yu and Liu Zongyuan, a deeper understanding of Lin Shu and Yan Fu can be obtained.
